The Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development has on Monday commenced the training of about 80 women farmers selected from the six geopolitical zones on Financial Literacy and Entrepreneurship.

Karima Bbangida, the ministry's Director of Extension said the programme is aimed at teaching the participants financial management in agriculture.

Speaking, the Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development, Sabo Nanono implored women in agriculture to make use of the opportunity given, as the programmes are part of the gender policy on agriculture aimed at providing economic security growth in the country.

“The certificate would make them eligible to apply for the Agric-Business/Small and Medium Enterprises Investment Scheme (AGSMEIS), one of the development finance windows of the Central Bank of Nigeria,’’ Mrs Babangida said.

She also explained that importance of the training, as it would promote the Green Alternative, the Food Security and Nutrition Strategy 2016-2025, the Sustainable Development Goals among others.

“The survey also showed that the two most excluded segments called women farmers and microenterprises and impoverished marginalised rural women depend on agricultural and agro-allied activities for livelihood.

“Women account for over 49 per cent of the estimated 200 million population of Nigeria and are major actors in the agricultural sector,’’ she said.

While speaking, Hadiza UmarPresident of the National Council for Women Societies (NCWS) said such training aid women's independence and help them manage their resources better.

She said, “This training is an eye-opener for women that want to go into business and are thinking of how to raise capital.’’

The Secretary of the Association of Women in Trade and Agriculture (AWITA), Jima Mariatu advised participants to not only raise capital but to learn how to manage it.
