Nigeria has been re-elected as a member of the International Civil Aviation Organisation Council for another three-year term, during the election held at the ICAO headquarters in Montreal, Canada.

News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Nigeria's re-election was as a result of its substantial investment in air transportation.

The ICAO Council is a United Nations specialized agency responsible for the sustainable growth of the global aviation industry. It comprised of 36 member states elected by the Assembly on a three-year term, out of which 12 are in the Part 2 category, with Dr. Olumuyiwa Benard Aliu, a Nigerian as the outgoing President of the Council.

In a statement, Director of Public Affairs, Ministry of Aviation, Mr. James Odaudu said Nigeria amassed 151 votes out of the 168-member states, surpassing the 133 votes it garnered by 18 in 2016. This he said signified Nigeria's growing popularity in the global aviation community.

Speaking, Minister of Aviation, Sen. Hadi Sirika said “The re-election of Nigeria into the ICAO Council would further spur it to push for the attainment of the ideals and objectives of the organisation, as it has always done, with a stronger commitment to the implementation of the aviation sector development road map of President Muhammadu Buhari Administration.’’

Also, reacting to the re-election, the Country Representative on the ICAO Council, Captain Nuhu Musa, described it as a significant moment for the country, particularly as it shows that Nigeria has a growing popularity in the global aviation industry.
