President Muhammadu Buhari on Wednesday recalled the Ambassador to South Africa, Kabiru Bala, and also pulled the country out of the ongoing World Economic Forum (WEF) holding in Cape Town, South Africa following reports of a resurgence of xenophobic attacks on Nigerians and other foreign nationals.

News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) quoted a presidential source as saying that Nigeria also demanded full compensation for the loss of lives and property of Nigerians affected by the xenophobic attack.

On Tuesday, Nigeria’s Foreign Affairs Minister, Geoffrey Onyeama, summoned the South African High Commissioner to Nigeria, Bobby Moroe, over the attacks.

The Presidency also announced on Tuesday that President Muhammadu Buhari had dispatched a special envoy to South Africa on the issue.

Meanwhile, aggrieved Nigerians dissatisfied with the way South African authorities handled the issue have resorted to attacks on South African interests in Nigeria. In Lagos and Abuja, popular shopping mall, Shoprite have been attacked. Also, some communication equipment belonging to MTN have also been targeted. The Police have however brought the situation under control in most of the target areas.
