A Severe Tropical Cyclone Damien has hit the northwest region of Australia, on Saturday, destroying trees, properties and forcing residents to take cover. The affected region is known for its richness in resources like iron ore. The Bureau of Meteorology had earlier warned locals, saying the category three storm would be "very destructive winds" and "very heavy rainfall" and may coast damage to lives and properties.

The cyclone with strong winds of 195 kilometres per hour (kph), ripping roofs off buildings, knocking out electricity in areas like Dampier and Karratha. However, it is expected to reach 220 kph, as it advanced towards the coastal area.

Authorities have noted that the cyclone did not advance to a category four of the five scale storm point, as earlier feared.
